Always wanted to learn the flute? Or want to pick it back up? It's never too late! I love working with adult students to help them learn new skills and unlock their creativity. My method is holistic, encouraging not only the development of technique but a deeper understanding of music, because I believe that music matters and learning it leads to a greater appreciation of our world well beyond the realm of clefs and scales.
My teaching philosophy
I believe we learn faster when we're having fun, so I have carefully crafted a studio culture that knows that every student is capable of great things when they enjoy what they're learning. The more students enjoy their lessons, the more likely they are to engage with the topics and practice in their own time. I tailor my lessons to each individual student, making sure that they get the most out of their lessons and meet their personal goals, while at the same time fostering a sense of play and creativity.
Creative play has countless benefits: it motivates us, tests our creative limits, fosters curiosity, boosts our mood, encourages us to try new things, cultivates our imagination and teaches us to trust ourselves. It's a bit of a no-brainer, eh?
I also encourage my students dive into the theory and culture of music. As an ethnomusicologist, I understand the importance of studying other cultures and musics, especially in early education. By cultivating curiosity in world music along with classical flute education, I hope to help students bridge cultural divides and develop empathy.
I encourage my students to take ownership of their learning, building on their strengths and working through their weakness. Students are expected to practice between their lessons, to ensure that they get the most out of their time with me.
Beyond one-to-one teaching, I value community & curricular activities as a means to further enrich music learning and foster curiosity. This is why I'm constantly developing a programme that includes everything from masterclasses and chamber music opportunities to summer camps and socials.
